Long-term Aptian marine osmium isotopic record of Ontong Java Nui activity

چکیده

Abstract The early to mid-Aptian was punctuated by episodic phases of organic-carbon burial in various oceanographic settings, which are possibly related massive volcanism associated with the emplacement Ontong Java, Manihiki, and Hikurangi oceanic plateaus southwestern Pacific Ocean, inferred have formed a single plateau called Java Nui. Sedimentary osmium (Os) isotopic compositions one best proxies for determining timing voluminous submarine volcanic episodes. However, available Os records during age limited narrow interval earliest Aptian, is insufficient reconstruction long-term hydrothermal activity. We document record using pelagic Tethyan sediments deposited Poggio le Guaine (Umbria-Marche Basin, Italy) precisely constrain episodes assess their impact on marine environment. Our new data reveal three shifts unradiogenic values, two correspond black shale horizons lower mid-Aptian, namely Wezel (herein named) Fallot Levels. These excursions ascribed inputs ocean through Combining published from lowermost Aptian organic-rich Gorgo Cerbara section Umbria-Marche it can be that Nui eruptions persisted ?5 m.y. mid-Aptian.

Rapid formation of ontong java plateau by aptian mantle plume volcanism.

The timing of flood basalt volcanism associated with formation of the Ontong Java Plateau (OJP) is estimated from paleomagnetic and paleontologic data. Much of OJP formed rapidly in less than 3 million years during the early Aptian, at the beginning of the Cretaceous Normal Polarity Superchron. Crustal emplacement rates are inferred to have been several times those of the Deccan Traps. These es...

Determining chondritic impactor size from the marine osmium isotope record.

Decreases in the seawater 187Os/188Os ratio caused by the impact of a chondritic meteorite are indicative of projectile size, if the soluble fraction of osmium carried by the impacting body is known. Resulting diameter estimates of the Late Eocene and Cretaceous/Paleogene projectiles are within 50% of independent estimates derived from iridium data, assuming total vaporization and dissolution o...

Multiple-ScS probing of the Ontong-Java Plateau

We use multiple-ScS phases recorded at Pohnpei from a 1996 deep earthquake under the Solomon Islands to investigate the shear velocity and attenuation characteristics of the upper mantle under the Ontong-Java Plateau in the Western Equatorial Pacific. Cross-correlation results indicate a vertical one-way travel-time under the plateau 3 s slow with respect to PREM, in agreement with previously o...

Rayleigh–wave tomography of the Ontong–Java Plateau

Ž . The deep structure of the Ontong–Java Plateau OJP in the westcentral Pacific is investigated through a 2-year deployment of four PASSCAL seismic stations used in a passive tomographic experiment. Single-path inversions of 230 Rayleigh waveforms from 140 earthquakes mainly located in the Solomon Trench confirm the presence of an extremely Ž . thick crust, with an average depth to the Mohorov...
